a) To find the characteristics of the logarithm of any number, count the number of digits before the decimal point and subtract 1 from it.

b) To find the logarithm of a number using the logarithm table, first find the characteristics of the  number and then look up the mantissa from the logarithm table.

Logarithm = characteristics + mantissa
