Given;

Number of students = 40

Fraction of studnet that offer science subject $=\frac{1}{4}$

Fraction of student that offer arts subject $= \frac{1}{5}$

a) Number of student that offer science subject $= \frac{1}{4}$ of 40 students

$= \frac{1}{40} \times 40$

$= \frac{40}{4}$

$= 10$ students

$\therefore$ the number of students that offer science subjects are 10

b) To find the number of students that offer commercial subjects, we need to find the number of students that offer arts.

Number of students that offer art $= \frac{1}{5}$ of 40 students

$= \frac{1}{5} \times 40$ students

$= \frac{40}{5}$ students

$= 8$ students

Let the number of students that offer commercial subjects be $x$

$x$ + 10 students + 8 students = 40 students

$x$ + 18 students = 40 students

$x$ = 40 students $-$ 18 students

$x$ = 22 students
